On the Street

SONG SUMMARY

This song spans about 12 years that were the apex of a special time of my youth.

I feel this would be the perfect music for a Broadway performance that chronical those unique times.

The song tries to capture my years growing up in New York City, in the 1980s, but more importantly, it attempts to show the contrast of today's youth-life to the way it was back then.

As the song goes - "Didn't have any Video Games, No Internet, or Social Media", etc. High tech was a cassette or 8-Track tape player. We were left to go out on the street and make up whatever activity we could with whatever we had. And often, what we had amounted to a nice pink Spaulding ball and a broom stick, converted into a bat. Home base was one sewer cap, first base - a car tire, second base - another sewer cap and third base another tire. Pretty simple, but huge fun. Obviously cars zipping by was always an issue, but no biggy....and nobody dared double park on our field 🙂

In later years, as our "CREW" grew to about 60 guys and gals, things sometimes became more complicated and more dangerous, but we never hurt anybody and nobody ever dared hurt us. It was our street, and we were ON THE STREET.

PS - The album cover includes an actual shot of friends and me at an open hydrant, and me with my hair :), and my one and only love. The silhouette of the crew is appropriate, because some of the crew are no longer with us. R-I-P. And there's the stickball bat underscoring "STREET".
