The first nine years of my life, we lived in East Harlem, New York - referred to as the Barrio because of the strong Latin (Spanish speaking) community. (also known as Spanish Harlem).
On Summer nights, with the windows open (no AC), from our 4th floor apartment, I could hear Latin Street Music coming from the tunnels, under the train tracks. It would go on endlessly, endlessly - gently putting me to sleep - a beautiful exotic beat.
Years later, this memory comes back to me, again and again - and I suppose, while I am not Latin, it is part of my music and who I am.
The memory of Barrio Bongos IS My Latin Lover. So I am singing about a childhood memory.
The album cover photo includes: 1) the actual apartment where we lived and the "Singing window", 2) a painting my father created from inside the apartment, 3) the tunnels at 110 St. & Park Ave, where the Bongos were played....and that's me looking up (and back) at it all.
If you have a Latin Lover, whether in a memory or a person, I hope this love song connects with your passionate love.
